Super Visa: How to reunite with your parent or grandparent

Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents are permitted to visit their relatives for up to five years in a row without having to renew their visitor status thanks to the Super Visa. The Super Visa also allows parents and grandparents to enter Canada repeatedly for a period of up to ten years.

What are the Super Visa eligibility requirements?

An applicant must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada in order to qualify for a Super Visa. No dependents may be listed on the application; however, the applicant’s spouse or common-law partner may.

A letter from your kid or grandchild inviting the applicant to Canada that is signed and includes the following information:

  • A promise of financial support for the length of your visit
  • The list and number of people in the household of this person
  • A copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document

The applicant must also have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is:

  • Valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
  • At least $100,000 of emergency coverage
  • Have proof that the medical insurance has been paid in full

The applicant’s child or grandchild must also be able to demonstrate that they can meet the low-income cutoff (LICO) standards, which are shown in the table below. The income requirement’s goal is to determine if a child or grandchild can support their family members financially, especially in light of the significant obligation that comes with caring for an older relative.

The proof may be in the form of the following documents:

  • Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year
  • Employment Insurance Stubs
  • An employment letter that includes salary and hires
  • Pay stubs
  • Bank statements

What happens after I apply?

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will examine the application once it has been submitted to ensure that all necessary documents are included. Moreover, IRCC may request that the applicant:

  • Go to an interview with their officials in the applicant’s country
  • To send more information
  • To get a medical exam
  • To get a police certificate

Processing times vary depending on the visa office and whether any of the above-mentioned extra processes are required. Passports and other original documents will be returned to the applicant after the application has been processed. If the application is accepted, the applicant’s passport will be stamped with the visa. If the applicant is from a nation that does not require visas, IRCC will provide them with a letter that must be presented to a border services agent when they arrive in Canada.
