Restoration Status

Helping temporary residents restore legal status and remain compliant in Canada.

If a temporary resident in Canada has lost their legal status or allowed their authorization to work or study to expire, they may be eligible to apply for restoration status.

It is important to understand that under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), status and authorization are not the same. An applicant can only restore:

  • Their temporary resident status, and

  • The specific authorization they held immediately before submitting the restoration application

For example, a student who lost their status cannot restore their temporary resident status and change it to authorization to work at the same time. The restoration must match the previous status and authorization held.

Eligibility for Restoration

A temporary resident may be eligible to apply for restoration if they meet the required conditions set out under Canadian immigration regulations.
