Federal Skilled Worker Program

Helping skilled professionals immigrate to Canada through Express Entry.

The Canadian government introduced a points-based system to select immigrants using objective criteria rather than subjective evaluation. Candidates are assessed based on factors such as:

  • Age

  • Education

  • Language ability

  • Work experience

  • Occupation

  • Other relevant factors

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is one of the three federal immigration programs managed through Express Entry. It is designed for skilled workers with foreign work experience who wish to permanently relocate to Canada.

Express Entry and CRS

Unlike candidates under the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker applicants do not require Canadian work experience to enter the Express Entry pool.

Instead, candidates must meet eligibility requirements and obtain sufficient points based on factors such as:

  • Work experience

  • Language proficiency

  • Education

Once eligible, candidates create and submit an Express Entry profile. A Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is assigned based on age, education, language ability, and work experience.

The Canadian government conducts Express Entry draws approximately every two weeks. Candidates with the highest CRS scores receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

After receiving an ITA, applicants have 60 days to submit a complete application with supporting documentation. The standard processing time is approximately six months from the date a complete application is received.

An Express Entry profile remains valid for 12 months.

Eligibility Requirements (67-Point Grid)

To qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, applicants must meet the minimum eligibility threshold under a 100-point selection grid.

Candidates must score at least 67 points to qualify.

These 67 points are separate from the CRS score and are used only to determine eligibility for entry into the Express Entry pool. If you score below 67 points, you cannot submit your profile under the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

Proof of Funds Requirement

One key difference between the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Worker / Federal Skilled Trades programs is the requirement to demonstrate sufficient settlement funds.

Most applicants must show proof that they have enough funds to support themselves and their family after arriving in Canada. The required amount depends on family size.

When calculating family size, you must include:

  • Your spouse or partner

  • Dependent children

This applies even if they are not accompanying you or are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

You may be exempt from the proof of funds requirement if you:

  • Are applying under the Canadian Experience Class, or

  • Have a valid job offer and are authorized to work in Canada
